Shop buildings on Hill Rise
Description
This view offers an example of how eighteenth-century buildings on Hill Rise, in the Richmond Hill conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames, were later extended to the front, by a single storey, to create shops on the street. The pair of two-storey houses to the left of view at 24-32 Hill Rise were built c1700 but were extended to the front in the early-twentieth century. They were Grade II listed in 1983; listing number: 1357708, although the shopfronts are of lesser interest. Believed to have been known as Hill Rise House and Fountain House, the shop fronts at 28 and 30 Hill Rise are shown occupied respectively by The Richmond Antiquary and Picture Care Ltd - FINE ART GALLERY AND FINE ART FRAMERS. The shop at number 26 is also believed to have been an antiques shop, although its hoarding is hidden by its plain awning and the window displays of both antique shops are obscured by reflections of the shops opposite on Petersham Road. A woman is shown in its doorway of number 26 looking into the shop. Signs in both shop doors show CLOSED. Partly visible to the right of view, the tail end of a parked Austin Westminster shows signs of damage to its offside rear wing.
