Title
Shop buildings on Hill Rise
Description
This view offers an example of how eighteenth-century buildings on Hill Rise, in the Richmond Hill conservation area of Richmond-upon-Thames, were later extended to the front, by a single storey, to create shops on the street. The pair of two-storey houses to the left of view at 24-32 Hill Rise were built c1700 but were extended to the front in the early-twentieth century. They were Grade II listed in 1983; listing number: 1357708, although the shopfronts are of lesser interest. Believed to have been known as Hill Rise House and Fountain House, the shop fronts at 28, 30 and 32 are shown occupied respectively by The Richmond Antiquary, Picture Care Ltd.- FINE ART GALLERY AND FINE ART FRAMERS, and HERBERTS, formerly a fruiterer’s believed to have ceased trading, its window reflecting the shop buildings on Petersham Road. To the right of view, a woman in a floral summer dress walks past a driveway secured by a mesh gate. The hoarding above shows BMC SALES SERVICE SPARES. A temporary boarding to the side displays a warning sign: DANGER DEMOLITION IN PROGRESS. Beyond the gate is the bowed wing and parapet of Holbrook House, its modern single-storey extension, once the showroom of Holbrook Motor Company Ltd, still intact although due to be pulled down. Holbrook House, also eighteenth-century, was Grade II listed in 1971; listing number: 1286011, and its frontage was restored to a traditional appearance. It now operates as serviced offices. The driveway once provided access to the service area of the company, but now serve the residences at Holbrook Place and the Holbrook Studio offices. Also shown parked in front of the shops is an Austin Westminster, its bespectacled driver holding a cigarette towards its open window.
