View of County Hall and the Lyons Corner House on Belvedere Road from Westminster Bridge Road
Description
View of County Hall and the Lyons Corner House in Belvedere Road, South Bank, from Westminster Bridge Road, showing crossroads with a police officer mediating the traffic flow. Looking down towards Belvedere House, the rear of County Hall is on the left. To the right is a three-storey stone building hosting a Lyons corner shop and the London Labour party. The building is crowned with a large advertisement for swiss rolls. Founded in 1884 by Joseph Lyons and the Gluckstein brothers, the Lyons corner houses became popular by the 1910s. They hosted hair saloons, telephone booths, and theatre booking agencies, as well as selling their own food products. This particular one was demolished soon after to make way for the South Block extension to the County Hall; it was designed by F.R. Hiorns and constructed between 1936 and 1939. After the dissolution of the Greater London Council in 1986, the South Block was converted into residential homes and businesses in 1995.
