Title
Houses in Chesham Place
Description
A view of the front elevations of grand houses at 29-37 Chesham Place, Belgravia. Numbers 34 to 37 are scaffolded at full height and surrounded by a hoarding. The houses have four storeys and an attic storey over a basement and are three or four windows wide, except for Chesham House at 30 and 31, which is wider and whose access is at the rear. The front doors sit under porches supported on Tuscan columns decorated with a frieze with triglyphs. The front elevation of number 29 nearest the camera is in Lyall Street to the right. A number of vehicles are parked in the road including a BMC van with the name of Post Office Telephones on the side and registration number GLE368C, an MG TC sports car and an Austin A35 van. On the left is a Ford Escort car with registration number XLE491G. Dating from the early to mid-19th century, numbers 29-37 Chesham Place were Grade II listed in 1970, listing number 1066264. Chesham House housed the Russian embassy from 1853 until the formation of the Soviet Union in May 1927. A blue plaque on number 37 records that it was the home of Lord John Russell (1792-1878), twice prime minister.
