View of Fleet Street
Description
A view east along Fleet Street towards Ludgate Hill, City of London. A busy street scene crowded with pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles. The buildings on the south side of the street consist of shops, pubs and offices above. Being the centre of the newspaper industry, the offices include those of the Northern Daily Telegraph and the Western Daily Mercury. Although the block across the street from the camera was replaced in 1934 by the Lutyens-designed Press Association & Reuters headquarters, most of the rest of that side down to Ludgate Circus has survived. This includes number 90-94, which was built in 1900 and Grade II listed in 1988; listing number 1262506. Further down, there are two listed pubs: The Old Bell (Grade II listed in 1971; listing number 1064658) and the Punch Tavern (Grade II listed in 1996; listing number 1064658). Beyond Ludgate Circus, a steam engine can be seen crossing the Ludgate Hill Viaduct. Beyond that, the dome of St Paul's Cathedral is prominent.
