Title
Houses in Albion Square
Description
Front elevations of 13-30 Albion Square, Haggerston. Semi-detached Grade II listed Victorian villas in Italianate style with two storey over semi-basements, portico doorways, arched windows and flat roofs. Planned by William Middleton, who commissioned the building of the square in 1844 as Hackney was being developed. In 1898 the rectangular central garden was saved from dereliction by Lady de Saumarez who bought it and established a grant with local authorities to preserve green spaces in London. In the background the tower of Queensbridge Road Primary School is visible. Cars are parked in the street. A big stack of empty milk bottle crates are left on pavement.
