Title
Business premises and flats in Redmans Road
Description
Fronts of eighteenth-century business premises at 42-48 Redmans Road, Stepney, and flats next to them, viewed from Redmans Road facing south-east. The business buildings were Grade II listed. The buildings are five storeys high, including lower ground floors, and have steps up to the front doors. At the right, the Ideal Trimmings Company operates at number 42, Suite 3840, and there is a board outside the front door advertising vacancies for machinists, special machinists and pressers. The front door is open and there are empty milk bottles on the step, indicating that the business was still operative. Next door, number 44 has no company name shown but has a similar vacancies board, a type used for the clothing industry. A belt manufacturer is at 46. The company’s name on its signboard is almost illegible but looks like RE Marx & Co Ltd. At 48 J Sirrett made skirts, slacks and sportswear. Next to 48 and set back slightly from the road is a post-war block of flats. In the foreground of the photo three saloon cars are parked. On 23 February 1976, the Secretary of State for the Environment was asked how many listed buildings had been demolished in the Greater London area during the last three years. The buildings at 42-48 Redmans Road were included in the list given in reply, as they were demolished in 1974. The extended playground of Redland Primary School covers the site where the buildings at 42-48 used to be. The block of flats next door is still in existence.
