Buildings in Redman's Road
Description
Flats, pub, shops, houses, distillery and warehouse at 7-25 Redmans Road, Stepney, on the north side of the western end of Redmans Road between Jubilee Street and Assembly Passage, taken looking west. On the left in the background near the junction with Jubilee Street is a high-rise block of flats which no longer exists. Next is a pub at number 7. It opened in 1808 as the Rose and Punchbowl but changed its name in 1874 to the Albion and back again in 1921. It closed in 2001, was demolished in 2003 and a block of flats was built on the site in 2004. The shop at number 9 was also replaced by the same block of flats. Number 11 is a very narrow house which like 13 has been renovated and incorporated into a block called Trinity Mews. Numbers 15 to 19 are houses which have also been renovated. Number 21 is one entrance to the Mile End Distillery and bonded warehouse, whose main entrance was at 86 Mile End Road. It was founded in the nineteenth century by Arthur William Ridley and produced Welsh whisky, which it marketed as “the most wonderful whisky that ever drove the skeleton from the feast.” The distillery has been demolished and the site now houses the Everest Leatherwear Company. The house at 23 and shop at 25 are both derelict and neither of these exist anymore - on the site now is an accident recovery service company. A no parking zone on the opposite side of the road indicates the presence of Redlands Primary School, which is not visible. There are nine saloon cars, a sports car and two Bedford vans parked on the street.
