Title
Derelict buildings in Stanhope Street
Description
View of 38-48 Stanhope Street, City of Westminster. A terrace of three- and four-storey buildings with shopfronts at ground floor. Pedestrians, including four men looking at the camera, a horse and cart and handcart with milk churn are in view. Buildings include The Royal Yacht pub at number 49, on the corner with Denzell Street, with price list visible: Gin 4d and 5d, Rum 5d, Whisky 6d, Brandy 8d and 10d. At number 48, a pawnbroker shop owned by Edward Chester, with signs 'Money Lent’ ‘Established a Century', 'Clearance Sale', 'Reduced Prices'. At number 45, the ornate three-storey building is the St Clement Danes National School established in 1811. Most of the buildings in this scene are shuttered with many broken windows and appear to be closed. Stanhope Street and the surrounding area was demolished in 1902 to build Kingsway and the Aldwych. These buildings would have stretched from the west side of the southern section of Kingsway to Kemble Street.
