View of Middlesex Street
Description
A busy street scene with horses and carts looking north-west up Middlesex Street by Sandy's Row, Spitalfields. This part of Middlesex Street was created c1900 from Widegate Street, Sandy’s Street and Windsor Street to form a route from Middlesex Street (formerly Petticoat Lane) to Bishopsgate. There are plenty of people in the street including some children and a man in a top hat. Obscured by a horse and cart is what looks like a horse-drawn double decker bus. On the left-hand side in a striking building behind some parked horse-drawn carts; a man stands in a large open window. This building was occupied by the London Provident Institution Savings Bank between 1900 and 1917. It is currently Franco Manca Pizza Restaurant at 119 Middlesex Street. Sticking out from the Bank at 125-129 Middlesex Street is the former Jewish Board of Education building by David and Emmanuel, built in 1895-96. It housed the board of guardians and trustees for the relief of the Jewish poor until 1956. A plaque on the wall, unveiled by the Lord Mayor in 1989, marks the 130th anniversary of the Jewish Board of Guardians. The buildings are currently occupied by The Astronomer public house.
