Title
"The Laplanders return to their Native Country..."
Description
Aquatint depicting a group of Finnish people returning to Lapland with Mr. Bullock and his son. According to the description, they are showing their ‘Immense Wealth & Curiosities, amassed during their Visit to England, 1822.’ Those on the right of the central image are Sámi people, the only indigenous people of the European Union, who inhabit Lapland, North Finland. In 1822 many Sámi people were ‘exhibited’ as curiosities rather than people at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, London. They were stood in front of a painted backdrop and gave short sleigh-rides to visitors.

Images round the edge of the print depict ‘Curiosities not known in Lapland’, including boxing, horse racing, Royal parades and steam-powered boats. The central image on the top row shows the Egyptian Hall. This is one example of colonial Britain assuming their culture is more developed, ‘civilised’ and superior than the culture of non-European nations and peoples.
