Title
Cottages in East India Dock Road
Description
Cottages by dock wall on East India Dock Road, Poplar, looking south. This image captures how poorer people lived in Victorian London. Many came looking for work and ended up in crowded, squalid conditions, but accommodation varied. These cottages in East India Dock Road look more like rural than industrial dwellings, and there were many farms across Greater London until the twentieth century. Crops can be seen growing in the foreground. Children can be seen in doorway with parents posing standing nearby in the garden.
