Bazaar in King's Road
Description
Front elevation of Markham House, 138a King's Road, Chelsea, on the corner of Markham Square. The building is split into a number of different businesses. On the corner is Bazaar, which was the boutique of Mary Quant, famed for popularising the mini-skirt and later hot pants, her husband, Alexander Plunket-Greene, and photographer and former solicitor, Archie McNair. Bazaar opened in November 1955 and closed in 1969. Below Bazaar was Alexander's coffee bar and Jazz club, a sign for which is on the railing on the corner. Next to Bazaar is Ronald Tuckerman, estate agents, and beyond this a part of the front elevation of The Markham Arms public house. A plaque to commemorate Bazaar has been placed between the first floor windows and was unveiled by Mary Quant's son, it reads 'Dame Mary Quant. Fashion Designer opened her boutique BAZAAR on this site in 1955'.
A Heritage Blue Plaque was installed to commemorate Mary Quant's BAZAAR boutique.
It was unveiled on 16th Sept 2019. The plaque reads: Dame Mary Quant. Fashion Designer opened her boutique BAZAAR on this site in 1955.
